Is it necessary or advisable to purchase comprehensive motor insurance on a used vehicle?

Before we can provide a simple yes or no answer there are several matters that need to be considered. Some of these will have to do with the car age, whether the car is under any loan or financing, and if the car still has a manufacturer’s warranty. So let’s delve into it.

The Car Age

The first thing to consider is how old the car is. If your car is new, or up to three or four years old, then we would advise you to buy comprehensive insurance. Repair costs and parts prices are still pretty high to be covered out of your own pocket in case you were in a car accident of your own fault and therefore Third Party Liability might offer a cheaper premium but could actually cost you more in the event of a claim. The Car Warranty Status

Another thing to consider is whether the car is under manufacturer warranty. If yes, you might want to opt to buy Comprehensive insurance with agency repairs as most manufacturers require the car to have only agency repairs to preserve the warranty and not void it!

Is the car financed or under an auto loan?

The last thing to consider is whether the car was purchased with an auto loan or dealership finance package as it may be a term and condition of lending that cars under such an arrangement have a comprehensive insurance policy throughout the duration of the loan as a safety precaution to help cover the outstanding debt.
