How to cover an additional driver like a friend or a family member under a car insurance policy?
A friend recently moved to Dubai, a family member that is visiting for a while, or maybe even a son or daughter obtained a driving licence lately! All are occasions that might see you lending your car to a trusted friend or family member. But is it safe to do so? Will my insurance cover this alternate driver of the vehicle in the event the unexpected happens? All are valid questions that we will clarify shortly.
But first, a look at the insurance policy
First of all, you need to review your current insurance policy to check exactly what terms are stated, or if you don’t find the information you’re seeking, you can reach out to your insurance provider to enquire. Some Comprehensive insurance policies in the UAE state that any driver with verbal or written approval from the owner of the vehicle will be covered in case anything happens that requires making a claim.
Buying a named driver insurance
However, if your insurance policy doesn’t mention that, and when checking with your insurance provider they inform you that this isn’t the case with your policy, you can still ask if there is a chance to take out a temporary or permanent named driver insurance extension. This option enables you to add the friend or family driver to your policy for a specified cost. Of course, there are no guarantees that any of these options are available with your current insurer as not all insurance providers offer this add-on, and some limit it to comprehensive plans only. So if this is something you think you might need at some point during the year, you might want to consider reviewing your policy carefully at next renewal to secure a policy that does provide this option.
