Why do I need to test my vehicle?

According to Dubai law, vehicles must be tested regularly from the car inspection centre in Dubai to make sure they are safe to drive. This aligns with Dubai’s goal of having ‘safer vehicles’. The testing ensures that unsafe vehicles, which do not pass the test must be fixed before they can be driven on Dubai’s roads.

When do I need to test my vehicle?

The table below outlines the different types of vehicle tests required to comply with the RTA Safety Regulations.

Test TypeDefinition
Defect TestThis test is done after a roadside inspection or if a defect is detected remotely. You must take your vehicle to a Vehicle Testing Partner’s site for this test.
Export TestThis test is needed before exporting a vehicle outside the UAE. It includes recording vehicle identification details like chassis and engine information.
New Vehicle Registration TestBefore registering a vehicle purchased outside an authorised vehicle agency in the UAE, this test is required. It’s also needed when transferring ownership or re-registering a vehicle.
Periodic Vehicle TestThis test involves regular vehicle safety, roadworthiness, and exhaust emissions checks. It is required to renew the vehicle registration.
Re-testsThis test is performed if any of the above tests are failed.

How long does the vehicle inspection take?

  • Testing a light vehicle usually takes up to 15 minutes. The total service time, from handing over your car to completing the inspection and getting your vehicle back, ranges from 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the number of customers.
  • Testing a heavy vehicle usually takes up to 20 minutes. Depending on the number of customers, the total service time for heavy vehicles ranges from 25 to 45 minutes.
  • The end-to-end service time includes everything from handing over your car for inspection until the inspection is complete and you receive your vehicle.

What is the validity of the test?

The test certificate issued by the RTA is valid for 30 days from its date. You must complete any related transactions within these 30 days.

What do I need to do before visiting the Vehicle Test Centre?

Before you go for a vehicle test, ensure you

  • Clean your vehicle.
  • Clean the vehicle plate number.
  • Remove any underside cover, if there is one.
  • Ensure the safety triangle, spare wheel, and fire extinguisher (if required for your vehicle type) are easily visible and accessible.
  • Remove any advertisements or stickers from the vehicle unless you have prior approval from the RTA.

What documentation do I need?

For a vehicle test, you need to have:
